Dushanbe to Khorog: 6-Day Travel Plan
Day 1: Arrival in Dushanbe
Start your adventure in the capital, Dushanbe (Fun Fact: Dushanbe means Monday). Explore the city’s markets, parks, and historical sites. Overnight in Dushanbe to rest up for your upcoming adventure.
You can book a private tour or explore the city on your own. For a special experience, we recommend stopping by the Rohat Tea House for lunch or dinner. Make sure to order the plov! There is a great view/atmosphere from their second level balcony.
Day 2: Dushanbe to Khorog
Depart Dushanbe early in the morning.
Drive along the legendary Pamir Highway, a road renowned for its stunning scenery. This can be a difficult, and somewhat bumpy ride. If you are prone to motion sickness, take appropriate medication with you. I recommend packing snacks for the ride as there will not be many places to stop along the way.
Arrive in Khorog, your base for exploring the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.
To get to Khorog via car, book a private driver with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Local drivers are used to driving this difficult terrain.

Day 3: Khorog City Tour
Spend your first full day in Khorog exploring the town and its surroundings:

Take a leisurely walk along the banks of the Gunt River, which flows through Khorog. Enjoy the serene views of the river and the surrounding mountains.

Day 4: Ishkashim and the Afghan Border
Today, wake early and drive to Ishkashim, a town bordering Afghanistan.
Head to the bustling Ishkashim Bazaar, which is a vibrant marketplace where Tajik and Afghan traders come together to sell a wide range of goods. Explore the stalls filled with textiles, spices, fruits, vegetables, and other local products. It’s a fascinating cultural experience.
First, visit the iconic Ishkashim Bridge, which spans the Pyanj River and connects Tajikistan with Afghanistan. Next, take a leisurely walk on the bridge, which offers the unique opportunity to be in two countries at once! Before trying this, be sure to check local border regulations and permissions before crossing.
Visit the nearby Abreshim Qala Fortress, a historic site that offers a glimpse into the region’s past. Explore the ancient walls, towers, and courtyards of this well-preserved fortification.
Make your way to the Zoroastrian Shrine, known as Chilkhana. It’s a sacred site believed to be associated with pre-Islamic Zoroastrianism before heading back to your accommodations for the evening.
Day 5: Wakhan Valley
Wake up early to maximize your time in Wakhan Valley. Grab breakfast at your accommodation or bring some snacks with you for the journey.
Begin your journey along the Panj River, which separates Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The drive itself offers incredible views of the river and the rugged mountains.
The first stop today on our travel plan will take you to Yamchun Fort. This ancient fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valley and the Afghan mountains across the river. Here you can explore the ruins and marvel at the history of this area.
For lunch, find a spot by the Panj River to enjoy a packed lunch or snacks. Take in the serene surroundings and the unique experience of dining with Afghanistan just a stone’s throw away.
After lunch, head to the nearby Bibi Fatima Hot Springs. This natural hot spring is a place of relaxation and healing for locals and travelers alike. Soak in the warm waters and enjoy the stunning views of the valley. Remember to allow the water from the hot springs to dry naturally on your skin. This ensures you soak in all of the minerals from this special bath.
Next you will continue your journey to the village of Langar, where you’ll find ancient petroglyphs etched into the rocks. These prehistoric carvings provide a glimpse into the region’s history and culture.
As the day winds down, begin your journey back to your accommodation in Khorog.
Day 6: Bulunkul and Yashilkul Lakes
Depart Khorog for a day trip to the mesmerizing Bulunkul and Yashilkul Lakes.
First, arrive at Bulunkul Lake, also known as the “Ice Lake” due to its cold temperatures even in summer. Next, spend your morning exploring the shores, taking in the crystal-clear waters and the surrounding snowy peaks. It’s an excellent spot for photography.
Drive to Yashilkul Lake, which is not too far from Bulunkul. Yashilkul, known for its vivid turquoise waters, is often called the “Green Lake.” Explore the area, hike along the shores, or just relax and take in the stunning views. Afterward if you’re feeling adventurous, consider a short hike or horseback ride in the area before heading back to Khorog.
Day 7: Return to Dushanbe
It’s time to head back to Dushanbe:

Tonight, arrive in Dushanbe, where you can either spend your final evening exploring the city or preparing for your departure.
